Cabildo de Gran Canaria

2018

The Painted Cave Museum and Archaeological Park is one of the most significant material testimonies of the aboriginal peoples of the Canary Islands. It is located in Gáldar, in the northwest of Gran Canaria, and the painted cave was officially discovered in 1873. Today it has the status of an Archaeological Park, occupies a space of 5000 m2, and was opened to the public in 2006 after the architectural project by J. Feduchi was completed.

The new lighting of the Painted Cave, the site and the museum has improved its preventive conservation and energy saving strategy by incorporating LED technology. It has also helped to enhance the value of the site, its visual comprehension and the educational aspect of the presentation. Special attention was paid to the lighting of the translucent skin of the vertical perimeter enclosure by installing a dynamic RGB system that creates a scenography for night visits, visually locates the site in the surroundings and presents it as a unique element of great value in the city without causing lighting pollution.
