Lighting of the Plenary Hall.

Ornamental

Ayuntamiento de Barcelona

2022

The Carles Pi i Sunyer Hall, located in the Barcelona City Hall and built in 1860, serves as the corporation’s plenary chamber. This space stands out for its impressive artistic decoration, which includes a mural by Claudio Lorenzale, a portrait of the regent queen by Francisco Masriera, as well as various sculptures, furnishings, and stained-glass windows by renowned Catalan artists.

The historical context of this space and the conservation of the cultural heritage required respecting the physical integrity of all structural and decorative elements. Its use led us to design two complementary lighting systems that operate depending on the specific needs. For plenary sessions, lighting requirements for filming were carefully considered, with high illuminance levels on the vertical plane, while the museographic setting called for softer general lighting to allow the architectural elements of the room to be appreciated. Additionally, conservation criteria were applied, particularly to the canvas presiding over the hall, the only element with medium sensitivity to radiation.
