San Cristóbal de La Laguna Lighting Master Plan. Tenerife.

Master Plans

Cabildo de Tenerife

2021

As part of the project to improve accessibility to the historic centre of La Laguna (Recored), a master plan was proposed to adapt the nocturnal landscape to the requirements of the site. The aim of the plan was to assess the different ornamental, urban and commercial lighting and to provide a harmonised interpretation of the historic environment.

In San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a World Heritage city, any town-planning project, including night-time lighting, has to respect both current legislation on heritage protection and the recommendations of the international and national organisations concerned. In addition, the islands are home to astronomical observatories of great international relevance, so the control of lighting pollution resulting from the uses and customs of this phase of the Anthropocene is essential. The IAC has developed, in accordance with current legislation, a series of very precise protocols and regulations that clearly determine what can and cannot be done in the field of urban, ornamental and commercial lighting. The essential objective in urban lighting has been the pursuit of formal uniqueness; in commercial lighting, suggestions are included to ensure that the lighting is of a non-polluting and non-intrusive type in public areas; and as for the enhancement of monuments, the focus is more on the lighting effect than on the overall formal representation of the buildings.
